In addition to overseeing the library and editing manuscripts, Maud was also responsible for the art department. Mayo physicians began including photography and hand-drawn illustrations in their publications in 1905. Dr. Louis Wilson, who joined the practice that year to head the laboratory after Dr. Herb left, was interested in photography. He worked with the medium himself, and photographers were soon hired to capture patient conditions and both gross and microscopic specimens. While photography was accurate, it was not as helpful in portraying sequential steps in surgery or illustrating potential processes. Further, all photography of the time was limited to black-and-white images. Thus, hand-drawn, sometimes color illustrations became important features in many of the papers written by Mayo physicians.6
